Cloth Diaper Help Needed...

Ok, I need some help from you cloth diaper-ers out there. I got all of Lucy's cloth diapers all washed and ready yesterday and tried one kind on her last night (a Esty made Chloe Toes All-in-One) and a different kind this morning (A Bumpkins Bamboo Diaper with a waterproof cover) and she absolutely HATES them. Every time I try to put one on her she screams bloody murder and I'm sure the neighbors think I'm beating my baby. I mean SCREAMS. I loosen and adjust and switch kinds and it doesn't matter. She won't stop screaming until I put the disposable back on.

Any suggestions here? I REALLY want to use the cloth, but Lucy REALLY objects! Am I doing something wrong??? Help!

You should read the blog www.babyrabies.com She used a lot of cloth diapers and did a huge review on them!

Hope this helps

Hi, first your family is adorable! My two kids are grown, and I have no advice for the cloth diapers as I used disposable. I was wondering why you wanted to use cloth? Disposable wick the moisture away from the baby, and keeps them extra dry. Cloth diapers don't do this, and would be bulkier. Anyway, I'm just being nosy and wondered if there was a new thing I'm missing--hopefully grandchildren will be in my future (after the girl's through college). Thank you, Kathy

I am not there yet but just recently started toying with the idea of cloth diapers. What made you make the switch?

what other diapers have you tried? it probably just feels different to her, but she'll get used to it.

We used prefolds and covers at first, but 1- they were scratchy on her bottom and 2- it didn't keep wetness away from her, so she SCREAMED EVERY TIME she peed. Now we use the BumGenius 3.0s, and she has no issue at all!

I don't know you and I don't have any cloth diaper help (sorry!) but I love your quote! :o)

Could it be the detergent you used maybe? I hope she takes to those diapers soon!

When my son was a newborn I would put him in Kissaluvs size 0. They are very soft, and paired with a prowraps cover fit nicely. You may want to try kissaluvs until your little one is a few months old. We now use Bumgenius 3.0 and they're great. Good luck!

I can't remember where I found your blog from (probably from blog jumping), but I cloth diaper my nearly 4 month old b/g twins.

Do you think that it's because it takes you longer to put them on her? I've never heard of the baby not liking the feel of cloth.... Gosh. I just can't imagine that!

The best advice that I can give you is to keep trying. It's very awkward at first, unless you are using something really easy (like a fuzzi buns or bumGenius). The bottom line is that you probably are not hurting her (watch out that any snappies or velcro aren't touching her because both can hurt). So, I'd just stick with it. After a day or two, she probably won't care. I'd try to distract her after you put it on her. Grab her favorite toy or turn on some music and dance around with her, whatever, anything to distract her from the difference in feel. I'd also say to use what you can get on her the fastest right now, so that she doesn't spend any extra time on the changing table screaming about it (i.e. you'll be able to distract her faster!).

Hope this helps! She's such a cutie!

If you're really determined, I would try a different type...like a trimmer type. Is the AIO that you're trying a one-size? Bum genius all in ones (not the one size, though) are really trim. Some babies just hate bulk or certain types of diapers. The fitted is probably really bulky. I personally like prefolds for trimness. There are a few message boards that can help, too!

Thanks all!

To answer some questions:

Yes, I've read babyrabies.com...love her! ;)

I want to go with cloth 1. To lessen my impact on the enviroment. 2. Disposibles are made with chemicals that I'd like to expose Lucy to as little as possible.

I've got several of each of the following kinds: Bumpkins Bamboos w/ covers, Bum Genius 3.0 (haven't tried yet), Happy Heinies (haven't tried yet), and two different kinds from Etsy, both of which are AIOs size small (7-22 lbs).

I don't think it is the detergent because it is the same detergent I use on her cloth wipes (we don't use disposible wipes we use baby washclothes with diluted baby shampoo spray) and also use it on her clothes. Its the Crunchy Clean detergent I read about on babyrabies.com (love it!).

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I'll just keep trying!

My son is 17 months and we have used cloth diapers since he was 5 months. I'm not sure why your child would scream like that. HUGS. It may be that you could try a different brand...not sure. you could try a minky pocket or a fleece fitted..they are really soft.
I wanted to add for kathy L. that the cloth diapers of today also wick away moisture. =)

I didn't start CDing until my daughter was 1 but we use a combination of BG 3.0, Haute Pockets (my fav), and Happy Henies. It probably just feels different and maybe bulky to Lucy. Maybe it's like trying new foods - if you just keep trying, eventually she'll like it! Good Luck!

Try the BumGenius 3.0 on her. They are super easy and fast to put on so she might not notice it taking longer to put it on. Once she gets used to cloth, she'll love them! GL

Also.. Kathy- there are certain cloth diapers- like the BumGenius 3.0 that do wick away moisture. We use these diapers everyday. My daughter can sleep 12-13 hours and her skin is perfectly dry! Cloth diapers have come a long way over the years. :)

We love our BumGenius and haven't had a problem yet, maybe it's just because it's something different. Some babies do not like change. I hope you figure something out, there are times of trial and error with cloth. We didn't like the prefolds so you might just have to experiment. The few times we've bought disposables for travel and a broken washing machine I've thought of the money we'd have spent on them so far and I'm so glad we use the cloth, also the bags of garbage we throw out multiply in my head to what it could be.

FYI to Kathy L.- There are many different kinds of cloth now, not just the old style with pins and all. Many kinds are made to wick the moisture away. We used the old ones at first and switched because we didn't like the moisture on her. But with the new ones, the moisture is wicked away, they breathe better, and the gross chemicals of disposables re not on her. We don't have to slather her with creams, and she doesn't get rashes past a little pink that goes away in a day. I hope you get those grandkids someday, and now you can share some info about cloth!

This will not be the most helpful advice ever but, some kids just don't adapt to change so well. We CD too and my son is in BumGenius 3.0 and we LOVE them!

I hope it works for you. I would say just keep at it and eventually she'll get used to it.

Could it be the tightness, velcro or snaps that are posing a problem?

What if you put her in a disposable and put the cover on the disposable? Then slowly 'wean' her to cloth completely?

GL!

The best way to clean cloth diapers is to pre-rinse them off in the toilet using a Bathroom Bidet Sprayer. So convenient and if you are trying to help the environment (and your pocket book) you can give it a double whammy by virtually eliminating toilet paper use, at the same time as you benefit from using it on the diapers, by using it on yourself. I think Dr. Oz on Oprah said it best: "if you had pee or poop on your hand, you wouldn't wipe it off with paper, would you? You'd wash it off" Available at www.bathroomsprayers.com they come in an inexpensive kit and can be installed without a plumber. And after using one of these you won't know how you lasted all those years with wadded up handfuls of toilet paper. Now we're talking green and helping the environment without any pain.

You all are so helpful! Thank you!

I have her in a G-Diaper right now. It is bulkier than her disposables so I'm hoping if I start her on the G-Diapers right now I can move up to the cloth ones!

Thanks again everyone!

I'd def. try out the BG 3.0's I've been using them for about 2 mths now and they really are super soft on the skin. As of now they are the only CD's I've used, but we absolutly love them. Like other people it may just take her a little while to adjust. Good luck!!!

I love the Dream-ez (fitteds and AIOs) and the kiwi one size diapers at mtdiaperstore.com. The layered soakers make for shorter drying times and the DE are certified organic cotton.

I think we were on a board together back in the day. So good to see bunnies and hot rob again :)

We registered for the Amy Coe sling (http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3160810&fromRegistryNumber=78604660&product_skn=92785). If I don't receive that I'll probably buy a Slingling if Carrie likes hers. Thanks for the tip! I'll go look up that sling and keep it on my short list. I really love recommendations from moms who have btdt! :)

I love the fuzzi bunz. bum genius turned out to have too bulky for me. www.softclothbunz.com is a great website for explaining all the different kinds of cloth diapers out there. I decided to cd because it turns out to be a little cheaper and for the environment. currently, my 4 month old has a diaper rash so I'm using disposables until it clears up. unfortunately, they still get diaper rashes with cd's--maybe not as frequently, though? and we use disposables at night because they hold more and my baby doesn't "feel" the wetness as much. good luck!

Just wanted to send some encouragement your way! We use Bg's (2.0 and 3.0) and we love them. My daughter is almost two and we started using prefolds and Bummis Super Whisper Wrap and Thirsties covers at home so she can learn the wet feeling for potty training.

Bailey actually prefers her cloth diapers. We wear disposables for stuff like church nursery, going to the zoo, etc. When we get home and do a diaper change she will ask for a "soft diaper" so I think that once your DD gets used to them she will like the way they feel!
