A Not So Merry Christmas...

So as much as I love Christmas and as excited as I was for Lucy's Very First Christmas it turns out that she wasn't in pain from teething over Christmas but from a raging ear infection (possibly brought on by her giant front teeth that have now emerged in all of their glory). Poor baby was absolutely miserable Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. We took her to a new, local Pediatric Urgent Care on Saturday to fell like the WORST.MOTHER.EVER when it is not, in fact, those giant chompers but instead a terrible ear infection. First Christmas + First Ear Infection = Sad Baby. I will say though that the Pediatric Urgent Care was amazing. We were literally in and out in 15 minutes as opposed to the hours that we would have spent in a regular urgent care. If you're in the Portland area I would keep this place in mind if you have a sick child over the weekend or on a holiday, they are truly amazing!

So now that her antibiotics and ear drops have kicked in Miss Lucy is feeling much better I am enjoying my second week off from work immensely. Honestly, if only I could get paid to stay home with her. It would be a dream. However, that isn't going to happen anytime soon. Rob is going back to school to finish his bachelor's degree starting in January so it looks like I'll be the primary breadwinner for, well, a couple years at least (he's contemplating law school, so I'm
seeing us living on canned beans for at least a couple of years). I'm glad for him that he is going to get his degree, I'm just sad for me because over the last couple months I feel like I'm helplessly watching Lucy's babyhood slipping away at a rapid pace. It is just so sad. I truly do feel like I'm missing out on so much. I'm thankful for a steady job, but it breaks my heart that it means less time with my family.

Anyways, enough whining for today... I want to share some pictures of our Christmas Day. It wasn't the best one, because Lucy really felt terrible, but we still had a nice morning of exchanging gifts with my mom and had a really lovely dinner made by Rob. He even did all the (millions of) dishes so my sad baby could snuggle with me on the couch after dinner. He's a saint I swear!

Our Christmas Day 2009:

The table all set for Christmas breakfast,

She's an old pro at this pony riding business,

Lou the cocker, enjoying the excitement,

We may not have gone crazy with gifts but Lucy's Nan Nan (my mom) and Nonnie and Pop (Rob's Parents) went NUTS! This is probably half of her "loot",

Rob with this puzzle stocking stuffer thing I got him, that literally took him two minutes to figure out. Why is he so damn smart?

My mom, "Nan Nan", all excited about the albums I made her of all my childhood pictures that she's kept in a box for the last 29 years,

The Christmas Dinner Table,

So that's it! Hope everyone out there had a wonderful Christmas, please share if you feel like it. I love hearing about Christmas, even when it is over. More to come later this week since I'm OFF WORK, yahoo!

"Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Let your heart be light
From now on,
Our troubles will be out of sight."

She. Is. GORGEOUS!
Sorry about the rotten ear infection!
And I know how you feel about wanting to be at home. 2 1/2 year old and a 15 month old and I miss them every day I go to work, but know I am doing what it best!
And I'm enjoying the week off as well!!!

Please! I MUST know where you found Dahla Horse jammies for Lucy! I must buy them. :)

My son was sick with an ear infection at Christmas, too. :( The pediatrician on Christmas Eve was full of the saddest babies I've seen in a long time... jammie-clad, sucking on nuks, and nuzzling with moms and dads. Hope Lucy's feeling better! (This was our son's sixth ear infection since September, so he's getting tubes in January.)

You are so freaking talented, I have no idea how you do it all. You writting is amazing, you work, have a baby and yet have time to put photos in a scrapbook AND you take amazing pictures. I really do not know how you do it all. Do you sleep?!!!
I'm 37 weeks pregnant and I don't even have time to brush my hair I have no idea what I'm going to do with a new baby in the house. I really don't! Share your wisdom! Please!!!!

Your post is such a good lesson in "best laid plans"! Such is the first law of parenting. Though, despite the ear infection she looks charming and happy in all her pictures!

Don't feel bad about the Ear Infection, we did the same thing with Ian. Our Christmas was spent relaxing at home.

We had a sick baby here for Christmas. He has 4 top teeth coming in at one time and he has a nasty cold. My poor little guy looks so miserable in our photos runny eyes, nose, drool. I'm glad Lucy is feeling better. I totally get the feeling of missing the babyhood. The first year flies by my son just turned 9 months and is a crawling speed demon I can't believe he wasn't even sitting just 3 months ago. It is amazing all they learn the first year of life. Good luck to Rob for going back to school that is great! I'm looking forward to your week off and more blogs.

That is one of my biggest worries! How are we supposed to know when it's an ear infection? Anyways, hope Lil Lucy is feeling better, it looks like you had a lovely Christmas, great photos :)

How stinky about her ear infection - but you are NOT a bad mother for missing it. I've missed three of my daughter's, and not because I didn't know *omething* was wrong, we just didn't think it was an ear infection! The symptoms are so similar with so many other things, and since the kids can't talk...it's just a rough thing to deal with, nonetheless.

Love all the photos. :)

Beautiful pictures and baby! Im sorry to hear about the ear infection...that stinks! My little boy is turning 1 tomorrow and he's been sneezing like crazy today...so I'm afraid he'll wind up sick for his birthday party planned in 11 days. It's really hard to know exactly *what* it is that is bothering them when they can't tell you themselves...so don't be hard on yourself...you got her treatment...so that makes you the best momma!

Where did you get that adorable sweater Lucy is wearing??!!

Happy New Year and Happy (almost) Birthday Lucy!

Looks like a perfect day minus the ear infection. I struggle with the sadness that comes with working too. :( What's a girl to do?

I'm so sorry sweet little Lucy was suffering from a raging ear infection. Poor thing! Don't beat yourself up for misdiagnosing what was wrong with her. We mommies do our best. I'm glad she's feeling better though.

All of your Christmas pictures are great. I think my favorite is the one of Lucy looking up at your mom as your mom looks through the album(s). So precious. It looks like you had a very special day.

As for feeling that time is slipping away, I can totally relate. I really can. Hang in there. Although your time is limited, you're making amazing memories with Lucy as evidenced by all of your great photos.

Happy New Year to your family and you!

You're going to miss out on the first YEARS of your daughters life so your hubby can go back to school? He should be working so YOU can stay home full time and raise your daughter, not your mother. Being a father is putting your needs/wants aside and do what's right for your kids. Yes, in the long run he'll be able to get a better job (does he work at all right now?) but you miss out on so much. Sounds selfish to me. Sorry if this sounds too frank but my hubby would never put our family in this situation. He'd work 2 jobs so I could be the one raising our children. Law school? Isn't that something that should have been done before you had children? Sometimes you have to put your children first and deal with reality.

He does have a job. To be frank, he doesn't make enough for me to stay home. I'm the one with a degree and the job with benefits. Going to school isn't something he "wants" to do, he is going so that in the future he can get a job that allows me to stay at home with our children. It isn't selfish at all. Honestly, this was a Christmas post. Do you REALLY need to get all preachy with me AGAIN on it? I feel like every time I post about something regarding work you jump right on it.

Merry Christmas to you too.

PS. For all who asked, they are Hanna Anderson pajamas, so cute! We have an outlet store nearby.

Also, the little sweater is Old Navy and the Christmas Tree Topper is Target. :)

Whoa! I missed this Anonymous post. Mom to 2 in CA, the REALITY is life is messy, difficult, and never goes as planned even when you try. People take different steps to get to what they think is best for their children and family. I hope you aren't teaching your two children to be as judgemental and close-minded as you. And I guess you get the award for having a husband who works so you can stay home.
