2010 Resolution Check In...

Since it's been just over a month since I wrote out my lofty New Year's Resolutions(aptly named "Eat.Pray.Love" )I thought I'd do a check in to report in on how I'm doing. Here we go:
  • Eat - I'm happy to report that we're doing fairly well with our cutting out processed foods. I don't think we were that big on eating them in the first place, but you'd be surprised to see where you see harmful trans fats, dyes, additives and preservatives. We avoid corn syrup and opt for products made with cane or beet sugar (we completely avoid "fake" sugars altogether because they give me migraines). We're also making an effort to eat foods that contain actual "whole grains", opting for products made with the main ingredient being whole wheat or oats, (like pastas, cereals, crackers, rice, etc). I downloaded the Environmental Working Group's  "Dirty Dozen and Clean 15"  food guide and carry it with me. It lets me know which foods I should buy organic and the ones I don't necessarily have to worry about (this is really only necessary until the Farmer's Market opens, which is when we buy all local/organic every week). To save money we buy organic produce on sale after checking the Sunday paper's ads and also buy organic at Costco whenever they have it in, we also buy organic milk at Costco, which in the end costs basically as much as grocery store milk. Lastly, we've made a concerted effort to sit down at the dinner table every night. We're selling Lucy's Peg Perego High Chair (we bought it used on Craigslist so back it goes!) and bought the IKEA Antilop High Chair that has a removable tray so she can sit at the actual table with us (review to come soon, this chair ROCKS). All in all I think I'm doing pretty good on the Eat Resolution.
  • Pray - To tell you the truth I'm failing miserably at this one. I had a sweet reader tell me all about her awesome church here in Oregon, and generously invited us to join her and her family and we STILL haven't gotten around to it .Katherine, if you're out there I hope the invite is still good! It's difficult to actually go to church on Sunday mornings because Lucy still takes morning naps, so church usually equals a super fussy Lucy which is awkward when you're somewhere where you don't know anyone. Also, I really don't feel comfortable dropping Lucy off at a nursery in a strange place. So, yes, these are excuses but they are really why we haven't made it to church yet. The Pray Resolution needs work.
  • Love - I love Rob. I love Lucy. I've got my two great Loves. It's just that sometimes I just plain don't Love everything else. I still complain too much, even though half the time I don't even complain to anyone in particular... I complain to myself in my head and it brings me down. I'm still getting dragged down by the things that aren't going just right. I think wishful thoughts of how I want things to be and instead of making them happen I get petulant that they haven't happened already or that it will be difficult to get there, it will be a trial to MAKE them happen. I've got to Love the journey as well. I'm missing out and I'm not doing myself any favors if I don't Love even during the difficult times. So, yes, the Love Resolution needs work too.
So, one out of three isn't so bad. Right? How about you readers? Anyone sticking to their resolutions so far? Please share!

PS. It wasn't a resolution but I did also blog in January about Simplifying and so far I've done one room and one closet. They're my zen little corners of my house at the moment. Man does it feel good to get rid of the clutter!

"The philosophy of mine earth can be summed up as this:  Sunshine creates happiness, and I create myself.  Nights are long and life is predominantly good.  Wind is refreshing.  Tea is wisdom.  Do the best you can, and be good to yourself so that you can above all be good to others. "

So happy to hear you're coming along with your resolutions.... One out of three is great especially with a baby in tow!

Congrats on cutting out the processed foods. We're pretty good about it at home, but our daycare provider is the queen of "food out of a box" and I think that we've agreed to look into getting another provider for that reason. It's truly amazing to me that someone would think that it's fine to give a one year old, and a four year old for that matter, junk out of a box because it's "faster," when in truth, a healthy, wholesome, whole-grain meal is just as fast.

Congrats again on your resolutions...Don't get down on yourself about the 1 of 3 thing.... You're making progress and that's all that matters!

Glad to hear that it's going well. Lucy's little face is SO adorable in that second picture!

Why do yoy buy organic milk? Do you like to spend alot of extra money? There are no reports that organic milk is any better for you than regular milk.

Alice, I'll say it again, organic milk from Costco costs me the same amount as milk from the store. So no, I don't like to spent a lot of extra money. It's a personal preference for my own peace of mind. Lucy doesn't really drink milk and neither does Rob so its basically for me.

Hey Bev! One out of three is actually really good for 1 month out of 12... thinking of it like that, you're way ahead! Also, eating well makes everyone healthier, happier, and more up for tackling the other resolutions. :) Good work Bev!

Bev, you are doing great! I love your push to eat organic and non-processed foods. I am such a cheapskate when it comes to food, I just cringe at spending twice or three times as much for produce, etc. But I applaud your efforts!

Happy to brag on your blog that I have stuck to working out 5 days a week. I am feeling so good, and looking better too, if I do say so myself. ;-)

I'm Katherine! Of course, the offer still stands. We haven't even been last week, or the week before because I am working nights right now, and honestly - I just can't keep myself up that long. We will be there next week though - so msg me if you want to go. We could always do an afternoon service.

Also, we didn't drop Violet off at the nursery for like two months when we were new. You don't have to, lots of people keep their kids in the service just because (plus we sit in the balcony in a so they can crawl around clap, etc.

I didn't KNOW about the Environmental Working Group list. How did I not KNOW about that list? Well, I do now, and when I looked it up - guess what, THERE IS AN APP for that. (Of course) Now it is in my iPhone. We recently made the same switch to organic. I ordered the Organics to You produce box service (which we are loving!) and I started ordering our milk, butter, eggs, and cheese from Noris Dairy - all organic and THEY DELIVER for FREE. Honestly, it has been a huge adjustment for us, budget wise - but and at times I really have to remind myself WHY because it does cost us more.

I could talk about this all day long, so I'll stop before I write a novel in your comment section :)

This was nice. I also avoid fake sugar because of migraines. I just stay away from too much sugar in general.

I so far have been just "okay" with my resolution. I am trying to not sweat the small stuff. It's not as easy as it sounds!

Fantastic! I've been seriously considering going the organic route with some things as well. With some of the studies out there connecting hormone fed cows with girls developing earlier it pushes me to research more. I have a little boy and am pg with my second due next month, not sure of the sex yet. But if these hormone fed cows are contributing to early periods etc in girls, there must be some effect on boys as well. I just don't know *enough* about it yet, that's why I'm still doing some research.

As far as my resolution...well, it's been rocky for me as well. But I have faith and I'm trying to work on it. Always enjoy your blog! Stop by mine sometime and say hello!

To eat more whole grains, I wholeheartedly (ha ha) recommend Barilla Plus pasta. New Seasons and others carry it. Loads of fiber and protein in it, and it actually tastes great! My favorite is the angel hair but there's other varieties as well. It has a slightly firmer texture due to the protein which actually makes it easier to get perfectly al dente. My mom, who is as finicky as a toddler, protested that she didn't want to try the "funny" pasta. After she gobbled up her meal, she quietly stated that she didn't notice a difference.

Thanks for revisiting, this reminds me that I need to revisit some of my previous posts, too...namely my "Dirty 30" list of things I want to do before turning 30!

I think 1 out of 3 is great. Especially since it's really 2 out of 4 if you consider the "Simplifying" one. I think the key is to keeping them top of mind and remembering what your goals are...that's why resolutions fail, at least for me. It seems like the first month (okay, 2 weeks) is gung-ho and then you just forget.

Good for you!

Sounds like you're doing really well with the eating category, which in my opinion - if you're eating right it will make you feel better and therefore help in every other area of your life!

One of my resolutions is to eat better also. I already cook a lot and I enjoy healthy foods. But I have a friend who recently told me she is doing a raw diet, which is simply eating only raw, uncooked foods. Not necessarily a resolution, but I might try it out. Just got a raw foods book at the library so I'm eager to read up on the subject.

Anyway - good job with eating better. It's great that you're raising Lucy to be a healthy eater also!
